  31. <h2 class="title">Welcome to the Boost C++ Libraries</h2>
  32. <p>Boost provides free peer-reviewed portable C++ source libraries.</p>
  33. <p>We emphasize libraries that work well with the C++ Standard Library.
  34. Boost libraries are intended to be widely useful, and usable across a broad
  35. spectrum of applications. The <a href=
  36. "http://www.boost.org/users/license.html">Boost license</a> encourages both
  37. commercial and non-commercial use.</p>
  38. <p>We aim to establish "existing practice" and provide reference
  39. implementations so that Boost libraries are suitable for eventual
  40. standardization. Ten Boost libraries are already included in the <a href=
  41. "http://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg21/">C++ Standards Committee's</a>
  42. Library Technical Report (<a href=
  43. "http://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg21/docs/papers/2005/n1745.pdf">TR1</a>)
  44. and will be included in the upcoming revision of the C++ Standard. More
  45. Boost libraries are proposed for the upcoming <a href=
  46. "http://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg21/docs/papers/2005/n1810.html">TR2</a>.</p>
  47. <h3>Changes in this release</h3>
  48. <p>This release includes 2 new libraries (
  49. <a href="libs/endian/index.html">Endian</a> and
  50. <a href="libs/sort/index.html">Sort</a>),
  51. as well as updates to many existing libraries. See
  52. <a href="http://www.boost.org/users/history/version_1_58_0.html">Release
  53. History</a> for more information.</p>
  54. <h3>Getting Started</h3>
  55. <p>If Boost hasn't already been installed on your system, follow the
  56. <a href="more/getting_started/index.html">Getting Started Guide</a> to
  57. complete the installation. But if you've reached to this point by
  58. installing Boost from a Windows pre-build executable or a pre-built Linux
  59. and Unix distribution package, that's already been completed. Likewise, if
  60. you're reading this on your organization's internal web server, the
  61. installation is probably already complete.</p>
  62. <h3>Contents</h3>
  63. <p>The release directory tree contains almost all of Boost; documentation,
  64. sources, headers, scripts, tools, and everything else a Boost user might
  65. need!</p>
  66. <h3>Library Documentation</h3>
  67. <p>The starting point for the documentation of individual libraries is the
  68. <a href="libs/libraries.htm">Libraries page</a>, which gives a brief
  69. description of each library and links to its documentation.</p>
  70. <h3>Web Site</h3>
  71. <p>Some general interest or often changing Boost information lives only on
  72. the <a href="http://www.boost.org">Boost web site</a>. The release contains
  73. links to the site, so while browsing it you'll see occasional broken links
  74. if you aren't connected to the Internet. But everything needed to use the
  75. Boost libraries is contained within the release.</p>
  76. <h3>Background</h3>
  77. <p>Read the <a href="http://www.boost.org/users/">introductory material</a>
  78. to help you understand what Boost is about and to help in educating your
  79. organization about Boost.</p>
  80. <h3>Community</h3>
  81. <p>Boost welcomes and thrives on participation from a variety of
  82. individuals and organizations. Many avenues for participation are available
  83. in the <a href="http://www.boost.org/community/">Boost Community</a>.</p>
